Pre-game and Post-game in Austin

Outsports on Oct. 20, 2005 did an excellent article about the pre-game and post-game events in Austin. The whole article talks about the writers one night event of going to a UT game for the first time. You wanted to know what the spot is for the pre-game and post-game party. Well here it is...

"The gay Texas Exes set up a tailgate just southwest of the stadium at 18th and Brazo
s. They told me to look for the RV with an orange tent and a rainbow Bevo flag. (Bevo is the name of the Texas mascot, a real Texas longhorn steer).

We arrived shortly before Noon (game time was 2:30) and tailgating at the gay Texas Exes party was in full swing and throughout the rest of campus. The rainbow Bevo flag was flying proudly at the gay Texas Exes spot when Mauricio and I met up with Michael O’Dwyer, a Longhorn fan from Da
llas who was originally from Ireland.

Michael left Ireland in 1990 to work for American Airlines in Dallas and went to his first college football game in 1992 when he saw Texas play Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl and from then on, he was hooked. Many of his friends were UT grads and he became an UT all-sports fan over time, though his special passion is football. He loves the camaraderie and fun that the group has at the six to seven home games in Austin each year.

Most of the guys we met in the group were Texas alums, Outsports readers and avid football fans. What struck me was that their group of 40-plus guys was tailgating out and proud in the middle of campus and no one cared or made an issue of it. They were one of thousands such groups of friends and colleagues gathered around the UT campus. Mos
t of the friends and family who wandered over were straight, and they blended right in to the party."

Unfortunatley the writer did not talk too much about hot frat boys, he couldn't find them, and he didn't mention the bars that were the best for team spirit. This is where you (the reader) and I come in. If you have any happening places to add, please let me know. If you know of a frat party to attend, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!

The places that I do know to hit up are the mighty 4 gay Austin bars. The best way to experience the bars in Austin is to bar hop. Now mind you I do plan to add a map, to show those who are d
runk how to stumble from one to the other, but for now the addresses will have to work.

Number 1 on my list is Oilcan Harry's, I know it sounds nasty but it is one the coolest gay bars, Austin style. Oilcan Harry's is located downtown on 4th Street, just between Lavaca and Colorado. Best thing is to park in a paid parking lot\garage, or if you have no room for a DD(Designated Driver) then get a cab.

Second on my list is right next door, Rain. If you arrive at the bars after 11pm, you will find that Rain has a long line outside. The bar is a very nice "upscale lounge bar". The dance floor is small, but if you just like to socialize and drink, then Rain is the place to go. Once again, Rain is on 4th Street, just between Lavaca and Colorado.

So I have a tie for Third. Both of these bars are completly different from each other, and I like them for totally different ways. Fabric and Rainbow Cattle Company (RCC).

Fabric is not a well marked bar, it is missing some good sign-age. Once you find Fabric you will find most of the cliental are college guys, and are card holding memebers of the "IT Crowd". Fabric is found to have some of the most exclusive DJ's spinning and one of the bigger dance floors compared to Rain and Oilcan Harry's. You can find Fabric on 5th Street just between Congress and Colorado, closer to Congress than Colorado. When your walking down the sidewalk, look for a white cement building, the entrance normally has a staff member blocking it, wearing a white T-shirt.

Rainbow Cattle Company (RCC) is a country western gay bar. You will find that the dress code is mainly, but not limited to, Stetson and Wrangler. This bar has the largest gay dance floor in Austin, which is usually used for line dancing and two stepping. RCC is definitly a bar to check out, if you think your too good for it then head back to Fabric, that is probably more your place. RCC is located off of 5th Street just between Lavaca and Guadalupe. You can't miss the western doorway and the rainbow flags.

Well hopefully this works for you. Trust me I totally have more to come for you in the future. Please just be patient with me. Thanks.
